Bennett Amendment (#3568) on DC Marriage

Below please find an analysis from my colleague Gregg Nunziata regarding Sen. Bennett’s amendment (#3568) on DC marriage laws…

Senator Bennett has offered an amendment to suspend the issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples in D.C. until a referendum or initiative is held.
Amendment Terms
• The government of the District of Columbia shall immediately suspend issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples until the people of the District have the opportunity to hold a referendum on initiative on the question of same sex marriage.
Background
• The Council of the District of Columbia recently legalized same sex marriage in apparent opposition to the wishes of the people of the District.
• The D.C. Board of Elections and the DC Superior Court, both unelected, thwarted efforts at popular initiatives on the marriage question.
• This Amendment would empower the residents of DC to vote on this important issue.
